Everyone always desires that people see their worth; especially our loved ones. However, it takes more than desiring to be virtuous, being virtuous is hard work. It entails all of you – your character, works and walk. It is all that makes you that qualifies you to be called virtuous.
WHO IS A VIRTUOUS WOMAN?
Virtuousness connotes goodness, decency, righteousness, morality and purity. It is conforming to standards of what is right and just and to approved codes of behavior. Virtuousness is the condition of being morally pure. The virtuous woman is a woman of strength; made strong by wisdom, grace and the fear of God. Perhaps, one reason for the rarity of virtuous women is that they are seldom sought.
The Bible says, Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies (Proverbs 31:10).A woman who loves God righteously by expressing warmth and true affection is a desirable wife. She possesses these characteristics as found in Galatians 5:22,23 which says, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
QUALITITES OF A VIRTUOUS WOMAN
The fear of God
The fear of God as defined by Charles Bridges is: “affectionate reverence by which the child of God bends himself humbly and carefully to his Father’s law. His wrath is so bitter, and His love so sweet, that hence springs an earnest desire to please Him.” Webster’s dictionary defines fear as: An holy awe or reverence of God and His laws, which springs from a just view and real love of the divine character, leading the subjects of it to hate and shun everything that can offend such an holy being, and inclining them to aim at perfect obedience.
The fear of the Lord was what perfected the works of the virtuous woman described in Proverbs 31. The Bible says: Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates (Proverbs 31:30, 31). Proverbs 1:7 says, The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Psalm 19:9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. Proverbs 10.27 says, The fear of the Lord prolongeth days.
The above scriptures prove how important the fear of the Lord is to the fulfilment of our glorious destiny. If you fear the Lord, it will show in your action, words and deeds. It will show in the way you worship God, the way you relate with your husband, children and every member of your family.
One of the qualities of a virtuous woman described in Proverbs 31, is the ability to train her children aright. God expects that every remembrance of you by your children should be for good and to prove that you fear Him. They should someday rise up, and without being compelled to, call you blessed (Proverbs 31:28).
A Woman of Trust
Another great quality of a virtuous woman is trust.A man is indeed blessed if he can trust his wife to be honest and discreet. Honesty with one’s self, with God, and with all those whose lives her life touches is essential and basic to trustworthiness. The Bible says, The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil (Proverbs 31:11).I want you to know that trust is not a gift, but a virtue that must be built up through experience and over a period of time. As a woman, can you really be trusted by your husband? You need to show your husband that you can be trustworthy and he can put his confidence on you.
In a practical sense, trust means that you place confidence in someone to be honest and faithful to you, and not to abandon you.Life is all about trust. As a woman, if your husband can trust you to some extent, in the area of handling finances, taking care of the children and even his own life. you have won his heart of love. There is no good marriage that can survive without trust. As a virtuous woman, your husband must be able to trust you with his past, present and future.
Your husband should be able to have confidence in you as his wife, that you can really take care of certain issues that affect the family. I can never forget some years ago, my husband came to my office and handed me an all signed booklet of blank cheques. Why did he take that risk? It is because he had found me trustworthy in handling financial matters, and therefore, could trust me with the handling of the money in that account without regretting such an action. There are some women today that their husbands cannot trust with money, because they are fond of using the money given to them for the up-keep of the house to buy new dresses for themselves.
To become like the virtuous woman, you need to be truthful in all you say and do. Don’t be found to say one thing today and another tomorrow on the same issue. It doesn’t sound well. I want you to know that there is no substitute for truth! You must let your yea be found yea, and your nay be found nay. If you are a woman of double standards, it becomes difficult for your husband and others to trust you.
In case you are reading this article and you are not born again, there is a need for you to do so. You need Jesus Christ to help you become the virtuous woman you desire to be. To be born again, you can say this prayer in faith: Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for delivering me from sin and satan to serve the living God and thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.
Congratulations! If you prayed this simple prayer of faith with me, you are now born again and a child of God. He loves you and will never leave you. Read your Bible daily, obey God’s Word and seek Christian fellowship (John 14:21).
